FolAAC is a privacy-first AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) app. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no collection of personal data. Everything you create in the app stays on your device, and everyday communication works completely offline. Online services are used only during setup and editing — to generate natural voice recordings for new words and to search symbol libraries — as described transparently below.
FolAAC does not collect, store on our servers, or share:
There are no analytics frameworks or advertising networks integrated into FolAAC.
All data created within FolAAC stays exclusively on your device. This includes:
Vocabulary & Settings
Media Files
All of this data is stored in the app's private sandboxed storage on your device (SQLite database and Documents directory). It is not uploaded to any server — the only exception is the text of word labels during one-time voice generation, described in “Online Services” below.
Caregiver PIN
The caregiver PIN is stored in the iOS Keychain — Apple's encrypted, device-only secure storage. It is never transmitted or accessible outside the device.
FolAAC works offline for everyday communication. An internet connection is used only for the two features below.
1. One-time voice generation for new words
Tapping buttons and speaking sentences plays audio files already stored on your device, with no network activity. The only time speech is generated online is when a parent or caregiver adds or edits a word (or uses the bulk voice-generation option in Settings). At that moment, the text of that word or label is sent over an encrypted connection to our speech service to generate a natural Albanian voice recording, which is then stored locally on your device and reused from then on. The text is used only to generate the audio: it is not stored by us, not linked to any account or identity, and no personal identifiers accompany the request. Sentences composed by the child are never transmitted anywhere.
2. Symbol search (ARASAAC and SymboTalk)
When a parent or caregiver searches for pictograms while editing boards, the search term is sent to the public ARASAAC and SymboTalk symbol libraries to retrieve matching images. Downloaded symbols are stored locally on your device. Searches are not linked to any identity. These libraries are operated by third parties (ARASAAC by the Government of Aragon, Spain; SymboTalk).
FolAAC allows you to export your data as a .folaac archive file for backup or transfer purposes. This file contains all of your vocabulary, media, and settings. You control how and where you share this file — FolAAC does not automatically send it anywhere. Treat export files as personal documents and share them only with trusted parties.
FolAAC may request access to:
These permissions are used solely within the app for the stated purposes. Your photos and recordings are never uploaded anywhere.
FolAAC is designed for use by children with communication needs, operated under the supervision of a parent, caregiver, or therapist. The app collects no personal data, requires no account, contains no advertising, and builds no profiles. Nothing a child does in the app is ever transmitted anywhere — sentences are spoken from audio stored on the device. The only online interactions (voice generation for new words and symbol search) happen in the caregiver-protected editing area. FolAAC is built with COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) and GDPR-K requirements in mind.
Everyday communication in FolAAC is fully offline — no internet connection is required to use the app day to day. An internet connection is used only when a caregiver generates voices for new words or searches the symbol libraries, as described in “Online Services the App Uses” above. If no connection is available, the device’s built-in voice is used for words that don’t have generated audio yet.
FolAAC contains no:
The only network communication the app performs is with our speech service (to generate voice recordings for newly added words, stored locally afterward) and the ARASAAC and SymboTalk public APIs (to search and download pictograms).
All app data resides on your device. Word text processed for voice generation is not retained on our servers. To delete all data associated with FolAAC, simply delete the app from your device. iOS will remove the app's sandboxed storage, including the database, all media files, and the Keychain entry.
